Beyond 501: The Best Variants

Whether you're looking to improve your accuracy, play in large groups, or just have fun, here are the 5 best variants to try.

Around the Clock

The best game for training

It's the great classic for learning to aim at the whole board, not just the 20.

Rules

  • Hit each number in ascending order, from 1 to 20, ending with the Bull.
  • Each player throws 3 darts per turn.
  • You only move to the next number once you've hit the previous one.

"Pro" Variant : Only validate numbers if you hit Doubles or Triples. Great for precision!

Killer

The best game for groups (3+ players)

It's the ultimate party game, where alliances are made and broken.

Rules

  • Each player throws a dart with their "weak hand" to determine their assigned number.
  • Each player starts with 3 lives.
  • To become a "Killer", first hit the Double of your own number.
  • Once "Killer", aim at opponents' numbers to take their lives. The last survivor wins.

Shanghai

The "Master Stroke" Game

A quick game (only 7 rounds) where everything can change on a single dart.

Rules

  • Play on numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
  • In round 1, aim only at 1. In round 2, at 2, etc.
  • Note accumulated points (singles, doubles and triples count).

Special Victory (The Shanghai) : If during a round, a player hits the Single, Double AND Triple of the current number, they win immediately!

Halve-It

The Pressure Game (Double or Nothing)

It's a punishing game. If you miss, you pay dearly. Ideal for learning stress management.

Example Rounds

  1. Round 1: The 20
  2. Round 2: The 16
  3. Round 3: Any Double
  4. Round 4: The 17
  5. Round 5: The 19
  6. Round 6: Any Triple
  7. Round 7: The Bull

The Punishment : If all 3 of your darts miss the required target, your total score is halved!

High Score (Count Up)

The Relaxation Game

It's the simplest format, often played by beginners. Excellent warm-up before a 501.

Rules

  • Score as high as possible in a set number of rounds (8 or 10).
  • Everything counts. Simply add up the totals.

Summary Table

Game Ideal for... Players Level
Around the Clock Training to aim everywhere 1-4 Beginner
Killer Party atmosphere 3-6+ All levels
Shanghai Suspense 2-4 Intermediate

Conclusion

Don't get stuck on 501! If you have a group of friends at different levels, Killer is often the best option. If you want to improve alone, Around the Clock is your best coach. Ready, aim, throw!
